In the fall of this year, our whole crew came together to create something really special, a one-of-a-kind Waka built using our new prototype construction method that utilizes zero foam, zero epoxy and zero fiberglass. We created an inlaid cork deck pad, custom made in house. We added hand carved fish scales between the fins and handmade wood fins from our friend at Hydrophile Surfcraft, traditionally joined into the board. The cork rails and cedar planks are coated with a natural hardwax oil.
Why This Matters
In the past few years, building surfboards has gotten harder. Supply chains wobble. Prices climb. And the environmental impact we’re putting on this planet continues to increase. But these challenges can be an invitation to do better.
This board is our answer. A proof that beautiful, functional boards can be grown, built, shaped, and ridden in ways that honor the ocean rather than harm it.
While it didn't win the Best In Show in California, it sure won a spot in everyones hearts who's seen it. Read more about it here and we'll let the photos do the talking. This is truly a special board, and something groundbreaking for us here at Grain.
