Grain Surfboards has been creating beautiful hand-built wooden surfboards on the coast of Maine for more than 20 years. Since the beginning, they have shared their process of board building with the surf community through their DIY surfboard kits and multi-day hands-on workshop experiences.

This new kit, offered for the first time through Huckberry, is Grain’s newest offering and comes after years of product development and testing. The process involves glueing up pre-milled cedar planks, and then using your rocker table, glueing down an eternal frame to begin creating the shape of the board. From there, you’ll add flexible cork rails to the perimeter of the board with glue and clamps. After some shaping and prepping, you’ll add your top planks and get into final shaping and sanding. From there, you’ll glass your board and wax it up! While some woodworking experience can be helpful, if you enjoy working with your hands, and can follow written instructions, you’ll be able to tackle this project with great success.

This kit includes all of the materials necessary to build your board including Maine grown cedar planks, a precision cut internal frameset, cork rails, hardware and blocking, glues, epoxy, fiberglass and basic glassing supplies. Expect around 40 hours of hands-on time to complete a board.

We've helped thousands of people do it, and we know that you’ll love the feeling of dropping into your first wave on a beautiful board you built yourself. It’s indescribable. We support our kit builders by phone, email, and in person. We love sharing this process.

Available Shapes:

Shearwater

Sizes available: 7’2” x 21.5" x 2 7/8" / Volume 48 L

Meet the Shearwater, inspired by the bird that effortlessly skims the waves with its wings extended. Like its feathered namesake, this board is all about speed with ease.

Stretching out the fish outline, the Shearwater inhabits a sweet spot among shapes we really love. Paddle it with the ease of a midlength and feel the acceleration of the tail end of a fish. Riding the Shearwater is like piloting a glider in a smaller, more manageable form. Whether you’re an avid longboarder looking for something smaller, or sizing up to a midlength, the longfish shape has really resonated with a diverse range of riders and conditions.

For maximum trimming speed, the Shearwater features a relaxed rocker and long parallel rails. Lower volume overall so you’re still able to duck dive, and finely foiled rails for grip on steeper faces. Single concave under the front half for lift transitions to a spiral V out the tail for added turn-ability. Standard set-up is a twin fin.

Arctic Tern

Sizes available:

6’4” x 20” x 2 ⅝” – 36L

6’10” x 20 ½” x 2 ¾” – 41L

7’4” x 21” x 2 ⅞” – 46L

A twin-pin built for longer lines, steeper pockets, and the journeys in between.

Inspired by the sleek flight and long-range travels of its namesake, the Arctic Tern is our twin-pin evolution of the Tern—a refined redesign that brings more speed, drive, and looseness while holding true to the clean lines and flow of the original.

The Arctic Tern excels on waves that feel rushed for the sweeping turns of single fins but with steep pockets where fish tails won’t fit. Riders looking for a board that blends the speed and looseness of a fish but hold and responsiveness of a pintail will find this board could replace a whole section of their quiver–making it a great travel board.

We’ll be shaping the Arctic Tern in 6’4, 6’10, and 7’4 lengths. Giving a good range of smaller midlength sizes for different size riders, and the option to shift up or down in volume for the type of surf and surfing you’re looking to accomplish.
